Mutterings

The next opportunity for the Fenestration Industry to expose itself to potential customers is now upon us – Interbuild. It does seem strange that what is, for our sector, probably the UK’s longest running trade exhibition, the organisers don’t seem to care whether anyone knows about it or not. If it wasn’t for the likes of SAS and Ultraframe doing the organisers promoting, it is hard to see that anyone would know of its existence.

Gaining new business is all about endangering your company to exposure to potential customers; it’s as simple as that. Interbuild charge a fortune for that privilege, after all it is nothing more than a pitch in a large hanger off the M42. The exhibition organisers then expect those companies renting space to fund the promotions to get people to turn up. It does pose the question, who is the exhibition for?

Letter to the Editor

Dear Ian,

After receiving such a positive response to the last letter I wrote regarding glass prices, I thought I would follow it up with a reply to reinforce my position, and answer any scepticism head on.

I don’t often write letters to the press, but this is an issue that I’m passionate about and is an issue I feel is important for our industry, as customers are looking for choice, not stipulations. For too long we have tolerated crippling glass prices that surely cannot be justified. Unless we act now, we are in danger of putting many well run companies at risk, in order to satisfy the balance sheets of multinational corporations.

In respect of Patterned Glass, it seems clear from the reaction I’ve received personally, that people want alternatives to help them survive, here and now! ...[ more ]

Charles Greensmith

Letter to the Editor - Let’s Wait for European Energy Directive

Dear Ian,

I note with interest that an energy group has threatened the Government with legal action for abuse of power if Ministers refuse to consult on the question of consequential improvements (CI) in the planned revisions to the Building Regulations.

It is going to be extremely difficult to have a full and frank discussion on CI, when there is no detail available to what the Government’s proposals might have been, had the idea not been withdrawn. ...[ more ]

Glasstalk programme announced: key ‘taboo’ issues to be addressed with on the couch sessions

The programme has been announced for the next GlassTalk (November 3rd, Daresbury Park Hotel, Cheshire) and guests can expect some fireworks when the event’s ‘On the Couch’ sessions address a number of key issues that have proved controversial this year. Of these perhaps the most emotive will be that of glass prices and Steve Sutherland of Dortech, who placed the petition on the 10 Downing Street website which called for ‘Lord Mandleson to investigate glass pricing activities currently being taken by the dominant glass suppliers to the UK’, will be On the Couch together with key industry representatives, to thrash out the biggest issue to affect the industry this year.

Dave Ruzicka, joint managing director of super-fabricator Sash UK will also be joining GlassTalk On the Couch. Dave has a strong view about everything but some of his more outspoken comments will appeal to anyone that has a problem with ‘Phoenix’ operators, ‘dominant’ systems suppliers, cut-throat, cut-price fabricators – and a whole lot more.

Another confirmed guest is Chris Ball of MBA Associates, who has much to say about why companies fail – and how to prevent it; some rather ‘off the wall’ thoughts on recruitment and ‘human resources’; and a great deal else. Interestingly, Chris’s opinions are honed through relationships with the industry’s biggest operators in all sectors – is there anyone that he hasn’t worked for? The organisers say they will do their best to prise some secrets from him. ...[ more ]
